West Coastia räppimaasturilla

Lauantaina 14.1.2012 kävimme hakemassa autovuokraamosta automme. Toinen oli normaali maasturi Jeep Liberty , toinen puolestaan vähän isompi Ford Explorer.. Viimeksi mainittu on kyllä viimeisen päälle hifistelty räppimaasturi, joka sai nuo ketkä jotain autoista ymmärtävät laskemaan alleen välittömästi.

Kansallisvelvollisuuksia Berkleyssä

Kun lähdimme San Franciscosta suuntasimme ensin pohjoiseen. Kävimme siellä Berkleyn kaupungissa ”Finnish brotherhood hallilla” suorittamassa kansalaisvelvollisuutta, nimittäin annettiin ennakkoäänemme presidentinvaaleihin. Paikalla oli muutamakymmenen muutakin äänestäjää hörppimässä sumppia. Ihan leppoisa tilaisuus.:)

Silicon Valley

Seuraavaksi hyökkäsimme maastureillamme kohti legendaarist IT-teknologian ’mekkaa’, Silicon Valleyta eli Piilaaksoa. Aluehan on itsessään tosi laaja, eikä mitenkäännyhteen pisteeseen keskittynyt. Kävimme pyörimässä Facebookin pääkonttorilla (HQ)Hacker waylla sekä kävelimme ympäri Apple Campuksen. Eihän näissä paikoissa sinäänsä paljon mitään nähtävää ole, mutta ainakin minä olen sen verran nörtti, että oli kuitenkin tärkeää päästä katsomaan missä ihmeitä tehdään. Mutta sanottakoon, että Palo Alto, eli kaupunki, jossa Applen Steve Jobs asui ja jossa tuo Facebook HQ sijaitsee vaikutti aika normaalilta pikkukaupungilta muutoin, paitsi että kaupungin laidalla oli kaksi hienon näköistä ja valtavaa hotellia.

Highway one: Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Simeon

Applen ympäri kulkevaa Infinity Looppia emme ehtineet kuljeskella kovinkaan kauaa kun vartija tuli kyttäilemään meitä. Vaihtelimme sen kanssa kuulumiset siinä ja hän neuvoikin meille parhaanreitin jatkaa eteenpäin. Täräytimmekin siinä sitten illan hämärissä pieneen Santa Cruzin rannikkokaupunkiin. Sieltä löysimme pienen ja kodikkaan Bed & Breakfast majatalon, jossa uinahtaa. Alla oleva kuva on Santa Cruzin beachilta.

Aamulla suunnaksi otettiin Highway 1 eli kaikista läntisin valtatie, joka kulkee monessa kohden aivan meren rannassa. 150km pätkä Montereyn kaupungista San Simeoniin oli uskomattoman kaunista seutua. Kaksikaistainen tie mutkitteli huikaisevissa vuoristomaisemissa, välillä tosi korkeallakin. Luonto vaihtui välillä ruosteen värisistä kukkuloista tiheisiin metsiin ja vehreisiin laaksoihin. Olin kuullut paljon highway onen hienoista maisemista, mutta en osannut yhtään odottaa tämän tyyppistä maisemaa. Aikaa tosin tohon matkaan meni tunnin sijasta kolme, eli paljon pidempään ku oltiin ajateltu.

San Simeonista käännyimme sisämaahan päin kohti viinitiloistaan kuulua Paso Roblesia, johon jäämme nyt yöksi. Huomenna matka jatkuu highway 101:ta pitkin Los Angelesiin. Kiitos vain Cromitan tytöille vinkistä, Best Westernistä löytyi paitsi hyvä majoitus myös sauna ja poreamme.:)
