El Camino Real – Länsirannikon historiaa

Kun pysähdyimme Santa Cruziin yhdeksi yöksi käväisimme poikain kanssa siinä rannan tuntumassa iltapalalla. Hetken aikaa South Beach Pizzassa istuttuamme seuraamme lyöttäytyi hieman epämääräinen, paikallinen meksikaanijäbä. Tyyppi oli oikeastaan hyvinkin rasittava eikä yhteistä säveltä löytynyt, lopulta liukenimme paikasta sopivan sauman sattuessa pois sillä tavalla ettei hän sitä huomannut.. Kuitenkin hän kertoi meille yhden mielenkiintoisen tarinan… Tämä tarina on kerrottu sen pohjalta mitä hänen selityksestään tajusin, joten virheitä voi olla.

El camino route
Yhdysvaltojen länsirannikollahan kaupunkien nimet noudattavat aika pitkälle samaa koodistoa. On San Jose, San Simeon, San Francisco, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz ja monia muita vastaavia. Miksi?

Nimien historia on mielenkiintoinen. 1700 ja 1800 luvuilla kun Espanjalaiset siirtomaavaltaajat saapuivat Pohjois-Amerikkaan antoi Espanjan kuningas käskyn levittää myös kristinuskoa tänne Pohjois-Amerikan mantereelle. Niinpä lähetyssaarjaajat (missions) taittoivat matkaa julistaen uskontoa paikallisille asukkaille. Yksi tällainen reitti oli nimenomaan tämä länsirannikko, yli 600 mailia pitkä pätkä Californian rannikkoa.

Lähetyssaarnaajien vanaveteen syntyi seurakuntia, jotka myöhemmin kasvoivat kaupungeiksi. Seurakuntia nimettiin pyhien henkilöiden kuten Monican, Barbaran, Franciscon mukaan. Tästä siis juontaa juurensa kaupunkien nimet… Mielenkiintoista!:)
